User reviews Review. Top review. Pleasantly Surprised By This One. I read the book and really liked it, gave me plenty to think about. But in all honesty I couldn't imagine they would be able to make a good movie out of this. I was certain it would end up overly sentimental or artificial or that it simply would not live up to the book.

However, they did it — hence the surprise. This movie IS the book brought to life on the big screen. The casting is superb. Greg Kinnear is the ideal father, Kelly Reilly is fine as the mom, and how they managed to find the perfect child to portray Colton Burpo is amazing. Connor Corwin is so natural and likable, he is wonderful in the role.

This movie is not preachy. It does not tell the audience what to believe or not to believe. Like the book, it gives those of us who believe further evidence that we're on the right track. But for those in doubt, it gives you plenty to think about and leaves you with questions you must work out for yourself. It just might leave you with hope and the courage to think there might be something to this belief in Jesus and Heaven. All in all, this is a splendid movie and I'd recommend it, and the book, whole-heartedly.

That character pushes 'Heaven is for Real' to the depths of manipulation from which it never recovers. At times, you can feel director and co-screenwriter Randall Wallace 'Braveheart' reaching beyond the low-hanging fruit of his Christian audience.

Reilly matches him, and has a fine scene where she demands her husband focus on life instead of the afterlife. In scenes like this, the characters feel real and identifiable. The problem is that 'Heaven is for Real' cannot leave well-enough alone. It has to show its hand at all times. Preaching to the choir is just fine by me, as I was once a member of that choir. But doing victory laps, sticking your tongue out at non-members and hi-fiving the choir while chanting 'Amirite, amirite?

For example: In distress, Todd visits a therapist who is not a Christian. Their conversation starts off interesting, with Todd citing that perhaps her non-belief will help him put things in perspective.

When she offers a scientific explanation that the brain induces hallucinogenic chemicals when a person is near death, Todd gives her a kiss-off line about not having faith. Why is she there? Did one accusatory line turn her into Shirley Caesar? He has an aura of mystery and a calming voice, but never faces us; we can project our own expectations as to appearance. Thankfully, the movie was over.

Kinnear makes a fine preacher and a good comic foil. I liked him, and I liked his last sermon in which he reflects on how people measure miracles with yardsticks when they should be looking for them in much smaller measurements. I really wanted to like this movie, but it kept poking me in the eye every time I got close to it. The soundtrack of the film contains Darlene Zschech's song 'Heaven in Me'. Colton says he experienced Heaven during an emergency surgery. He describes to his incredulous family about having seen the surgeon operating, his mother calling people in the waiting room to pray, and his father in another room yelling at God to not let him die.
